Frederik Christoffel Johannes Bester

Born 16/07/1961 in Kokstad, South Africa.  Currently living in Bloemfontein.  Married to Jeanette, and they have 5 children (Dirk-Wouter, Loraine, Gretha, Jeanné and Jolene).  Matriculated at Paul Erasmus Secondary School, Senekal (Republic of South Africa) in 1979.  Received the medical degrees – MBChB (UOFS) in 1985, M.MED (INT, UOFS) in 1993, and registered as FCP (S.A.) in 1993.  During university training he served on the medical the student representative council, student representative council, and was chairman of the student community service organization.  He received the MER national bursary in 1984, and the university’s DUX Student award in 1985.  Worked as Intern and Medical (research) Officer at Pelonomi and Universitas Hospitals with the Department of Internal Medicine.  During this time involved with Epidemiological research amongst Elderly Blacks.  Was also instrumental in the development of many elderly care services in Bloemfontein. Registered as Physician January 1994.  Currently in pricate practice.  Has traveled widely through the world (Scotland, United States, Mexico, Netherlands, Hungary, Ghana, Spain, Germany, Austria, United Kingdom) to visit care models for the age, broaden professional knowledge, and to present papers.  Has 12 scientific papers to his credit, and did numerous formal presentations on basic research findings.  Listed in 1998 in “Who’s who in the world” (15th edition).  Listed in 1999 in “Outstanding people of the 20th Century”.  Special academic interests are Geriatrics, Gastro-enterology, Rumatology, Pulmonology and Cardiology.  Hobbies:  Computers, aviation (PPL with night rating), cycling, music, stock exchange, Bonsmara cattle.

Play Squash, enjoys rugby, tennis, cricket and motor racing. Interested in computers, economics, politics, aviation. Professional interests are Gerontology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Cardiology and Rheumatology. Also play guitar, sing and fly light aircraft’s during spare time (obtained PPL in 1995).


GENERAL EDUCATION:

Started school training in the province of the Orange Free State at Paul Roux.  Completed school training at the Paul Erasmus Secondary school in Senekal (Eastern Free State). Matriculate in 1979 with distinction on average.  Headboy of the school and sang in the Orange Free State Youth Choir.

1. Epidemiological study of Elderly blacks in the Orange Free State (1987-1988).

2. BY 1023/BGSA 008. Efficacy and safety of Pantoprazole 20mg per day versus Ranitidine 150 mg per day in relapse Prophylaxis over one year for patients with healed reflux esophagitis in a preceding acute healing phase with 40 mg pantoprazole per day. (1997/1998) – completed.

3. BY 1023/BGSA 017 Pantoprazole 20 mg versus placebo in Gr. 0 Esophagitis.

4. Boerhinger Ingelheim Trial 534.11 in acute Ischaemic stroke. Cerestat Trial (1996-1997) Trial was prematurely terminated due to adverse events – co-investgator.

5. ENO-AUS 96/601 A multicentre, randomized, open label, parallel group, clinical trial compare the efficacy and safety of once daily subcutaneously administered enoxaparin in a home/early discharge setting and continuously infused heparin in hospital for the treatment of deep vein thrombosis (without pulmonary embolism) in patients eligible for home treatment.
